RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE SAN DIEGO URBAN-RURAL ROUNDTABLE, June 6, 2011, Balboa Club, San Diego
Presented to Supervisor Ron Roberts, County of San Diego; Mayor Jerry Sanders, City of San Diego, and Secretary Karen Ross, California Department of Food and Ag

Three major Recommendations (from the draft Executive Summary, Final Report in process)

  1. Adopt and implement a comprehensive set of food system policies for the County and City of San Diego.
  2. Align and leverage the political strength of the County, City and region to support key federal, state and regional food and agricultural policies.
  3. Support the creation of a regional food system alliance.

Roots of Change facilitated the June 6, 2011 meeting, and helped manage the deliberations of the The San Diego Urban-Rural Roundtable. The Roundtable brought together over 100 leaders and stakeholders from around the San Diego region between March 21 and June 6, 2011, to develop a set of recommendations aimed at building a healthy, fair, economically thriving, and environmentally sustainable food system for all residents of San Diego County.

The Roundtable’s recommendations build on the work of the San Diego Food System Working Group, the County Health and Human Services Agency, the Healthy Works initiative, and scores of other governmental, private sector, and community efforts.  The Roundtable’s deliberations were informed by the recent San Diego Food System Assessment produced by the Food System Working Group in partnership with the UC Davis Agricultural Sustainability Institute.

A draft of the recommendations is available on line for comments:

The comment period ends on June 15, 2011 at which time the Roundtable’s Final Report will get written.

The June 6. 2011 presentations of the Roundtable Recommendations (at the Balboa Club, San Diego) is available for viewing on The Global ARC’s Alternative Food Systems Vimeo Channel:  http://vimeo.com/channels/206258. The categories covered include water pricing, food system infrastructure, procurement policies, food access, education and training, and the creation of a food system alliance for the San Diego Region.

Micheal R. Dimock (President, Roots of Change), placed the Roundtable’s effort in a larger context. He described the importance of urban-rural interdependencies in efforts to promote healthy food systems at a regional scale.
