Challenge:
BMP for utilizing ‘vacant lots’ as Neighborhood Gardens
I’m looking for real world, actual case studies of the cities and towns that do a great job of re-purposing vacant lots as Neighborhood Gardens.
Lots can be city or privately owned.
Incentives can be anything from property tax abatement to a thank you from the Mayor.
What cities are setting the bar for this?
my organization is Victory Gardens San Diego.

thanks
Vacant Lots are often a blight.
Many people are un or underemployed and can use their time and skills to build gardens and grow food.

I don’t need info about Community Gardens and how good they are. I already know that.
I am looking for Data about Municipal Governments that are pro-actively leading the conversion of vacant lot to garden.

Hey Richard,
Thanks for posting this challenge. I’d love to see Victory Gardens entered as organization too. The idea is to share your groups mission, tell us what your organization had deemed mission critical (what do we need to be doing, and how are you doing it). The idea here is to begin building a network for community-based organizations to share their challenge in a way that may resonate with researchers who give a darn (action researchers who want to do use-inspired, problem-solving, solutions oriented research). I’d like your help thinking through how to do this best. Also I will be teaching my field research practicum at UCSD (Urban Studies and Planning) this fall and winter. We can set you up some research interns if you like. I will be sending out an invitation soon soliciting internship placements. I need to place upwards of 90 students looking to make the world a better place.
