Ocean View Growing Grounds

A Health Generator and Knowledge Hub in our Community

A 27,000 square foot piece of property in a densely populated, low-income community of color that lies between an Interstate (I-805) and an auto repair shop on a busy bus line - a piece of nature in a neighborhood identified as a brownfield, a food desert, and a food swamp. It is a place to grow food, connect with neighbors, learn new things about healthy living and share your knowledge while sitting in nature in the middle of an urban neighborhood. As a Climate Justice Learning Hub, it is also a place for people to learn about the impacts of climate change on their community and how they can make their community resilient and to have a voice in policies related to Environmental Justice.

A Pipeline for Youth of Color into Climate Justice

The Young Environmental Justice Advocates Academy reflects The Global ARC’s commitment to supporting Youth of Color in developing their voice and bringing it into the public dialogue. The goal of the Academy is to create a pipeline that trains and activates Youth of Color as activists and leaders in the Environmental Justice Movement in San Diego.

The Academy, which hosts two cohorts per year, cultivates these leaders/activists through a mix of formal training and hands-on experience. It accomplishes this by:

1. Taking participants through a series of workshops on Climate Science, Environmental Justice, and Nature-Based Climate Solutions, with a focus on how these issues affect the local community.

2. Training the youth on the development and implementation of a Community Education Campaign focused on the benefits of applying Nature-Based Climate Solutions (e.g., green infrastructure, planting trees, community gardens, water harvesting, composting systems, bioswales, etc.) to their respective neighborhoods.

3. Supporting youth as they utilize what they learned in the training portion to develop their own Community Education Campaign focused on how Climate Change and Environmental Justice affect their community and what they can do to protect their community.

4. Connecting participants/alumni with youth-led advocacy groups addressing Climate Change and Environmental Justice.
