Paul L. Watson, Jr., MSHS
President/CEO

Formerly Executive Director of the Training and Research Institute for Residential Youth Centers in New Haven, CT; San Diego Youth and Community Services; and Watson and Associates International. Paul began his career as a youth organizer at the age of 17. He has a Master's degree from Springfield College. He began a consultant organization in 1998 and specialized in Community Development, Youth Development, Child Welfare, and Organizational Development. He successfully completed International projects in Central Asia (Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan), The Netherlands, Brazil, Jamaica, and Egypt. He is a national trainer in Youth Development and a member of the Community Youth Development Design Team. He was trained as an ICA Participatory Facilitator. Paul has also served as faculty at Springfield College, New School of Architecture and Design, San Diego City College, and UC San Diego. Paul has won numerous awards and has published both books and articles.

Bill Oswald
Associate Executive Director for Research and Evaluation

Bill received his Ph.D. from the University of Rhode Island in 1988 where he studied Community Psychology. While his work has varied over the years, it has remained focused on fighting the structural causes of poverty by working side-by-side with people in poverty to support them in bringing their voice into the public dialogue. This work has ranged from direct, grassroots community organizing to running a regional training center for Community Organizers to serving as Dean/faculty at Springfield College, School of Human Services that focused on providing access to postsecondary education to communities that have historically been denied that access. Bill’s more recent work includes conducting Participatory Action/Civically Engaged Research and providing support to immigrant/refugee communities and their organizations. Bill’s responsibilities at the Global ARC include overseeing and managing projects related to Community Youth Development, Environmental Justice, and Research and Evaluation.

Marina Ibarra
Community Engagement Coordinator

Marina has been with the Global ARC since 2015, starting as a volunteer at Ocean View Growing Grounds. Later she started working as the Community Outreach Coordinator at the OVGG, promoting health and connecting community members to the Global Food Justice Movement through the urban garden and giving them the opportunity to connect with professors, researchers, students, community knowledge, and residents. Marina has also helped with teaching UCSD students interested in community organizing, taking them to do field work canvasing the community, creating surveys, and more. Additionally, Marina works as an advocate for residents, students, and parents, informing them about the opportunities that the San Diego Unified School District has for our children in school and giving advice to parents on advocating for their children's education. As a member of the Global ARC who is fluent in both English and Spanish, Marina helps with translation on projects with San Diego’s hispanic populations. For 15 years Marina has been a member of a non-profit organization Latinos y Latinas En Acción, and currently serves on their board of directors, promoting the immigrant vote, filling out immigration forms, providing citizenship classes, and more.

 

Kristopher Garcia Raudales
Research Associate

Kristopher started at the Global Action Resource Center as a student intern assisting the YEJA program with research, participating in a PSRO event and working at the Ocean View Growing Grounds. After graduating from UC San Diego in 2022 with a Bachelor’s in Urban Studies and Planning, he became an official member of the Global ARC as the Research Associate. He now serves the organization by providing research under environmental justice issues and funding opportunities, along with supervising our team of university interns and managing the organization’s social media platforms. He values the idea of serving others and hopes to be of service to the community of San Diego in improving equity and quality of life for all community members. Kristopher enjoys photography and is fluent in English and Spanish.

 

Ocean View Growing Grounds

Thi Vo
Environmental Justice Learning Hub Manager

Thi is a UC Berkeley Alumna originally from San Diego, Thi is currently our Environmental Justice Learning hub Manager. Her focus is on OVGG’s crop production, soil health management, and does research on environmentally sustainable urban agriculture methodology. She was also a fellow in the Multinational Exchange for Sustainable Agriculture’s (MESA) Applied Agroecology Program and received her certificate in applied agroecology in 2022. Thi sees San Diego as a rising community in the conversation on food systems with Black, indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) voices leading the way and is truly excited to see communities coming together to support that movement.

 

Lily McCann
Agriculture Specialst / Administrative Assistant

Lily is a UCSD alum with a bachelor’s degree in Anthropology with a focus in Climate Change and Human Solutions. With an interest in cooking and healthy eating, and a passion for sustainable agriculture, Lily is excited to be involved in food production from planting the seeds in the soil, to improving access to healthy, sustainably produced and culturally relevant foods. Her focus is on phytoremediation, native demonstration garden, seed saving project, and general food production at OVGG. Lily sees food sovereignty as a vital aspect of environmental justice, and as an integral part of strengthening the natural and built environments in which we live, work and play. 

Young Environmental Justice Advocates Academy

Catherine Parker
YEJAA Program Manager

Catherine is a UCSD alum with a bachelor's in Anthropology of Climate Change and Human Solutions, and a minor in Human Rights and Migration. With a professional background in fine art and film, Catherine is interested in the ways in which creative arts serve as a medium to bridge the gap between climate science, its related intersectional social issues, and people's lived experiences. Catherine started working with the Global ARC as a fellow of the College Corps program and assisted the previous Academy director, Raphael Lagoc, before transitioning into the role of Program Manager. What excites Catherine most about leading the Academy is the chance to provide support and mentorship for San Diego's upcoming generation of Climate advocates.

 

Research Associates

Zainab Altimimi
Research Associate (Weaver)

Zainab is a mother of three who is very active in her El Cajon community. She dedicates her time to teaching Arabic and working with the community as a volunteer. She worked with the Islamic Center of San Diego-East County and volunteered with Somali Family Services to help educate and talk to the community about COVID-19 vaccinations. She has had many experiences as a Community Health Worker in helping her community become educated about vaccines and booster shots. With that experience, Zainab will continue her role as a community worker by working with Global Arc.  What motivates her is helping her community,  serving them so that they can grow and have a strong impact. Zainab loves to cook, teach Arabic, and take a good walk at the beach!  

 

Men Nguyen
Research Associate (Weaver)

Men has received a B.A. in English language teaching, an M.A in English linguistics from the Vietnam National University, and a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction majoring in second language acquisition – ESL from the Texas Tech University. She has 14 years of experience working as an ESL lecturer and interpreter in Vietnam and 7 years of experience working as a research assistant at Texas Tech University. She loves working for the Vietnamese community development and has a great passion for work related to education, research, communication, and interpretation. Today, under her own business: B Learning LLC, cooperates with the Global Action Research Center as a community weaver to assist with community engagement to increase COVID-19 vaccination and participation in preventive care such as flu vaccines, mammograms, diabetes screenings, and blood pressure management.

Interns and Fellows

  • Jeannie Lee

    INTERN

    Jeannie is a recent graduate from UCSD with a degree in Human Biology/Cognitive Psychology and a Global Health minor. She developed a passion for global health through her experience at a migrant health clinic as well as at her tutoring position working with refugees at a local elementary school. Seeing the inequality in resources and healthcare for marginalized communities, she became passionate to make a change that would directly impact these communities. Using her previous experience in social science research, she hopes to combine her passion for research and for global health at the Global ARC to contribute to creating effective, lasting policies that will better the community.

  • Arnold Villagrana

    FELLOW

    Arnold joined The Global ARC because he wanted get to experience new opportunities with new people, while also gaining knowledge from these opportunities. His interest revolves around helping people; lending a hand to whoever needs it. While The Global Arc isn’t directly related to his career aspirations, it does help him get a view from different perspectives of issues he wasn’t aware of before, and how he can help to make a change. Arnold hopes to gain knowledge from new opportunities and from the people that surround him, unlocking his full potential and growing as an individual.

  • Autumn Hughes

    FELLOW

    Autumn is an undergrad at UCSD studying to complete her BS in Public Health and a minor in Law and Society. Autumn was inspired to switch to public health after becoming a Resident Assistant at UCSD, and being trained to become a resource for her community. Autumn was eager to join Global ARC upon becoming a college corp fellow for the 23/24 year. Wanting to know about organizing and running a non-profit, Global ARC was the perfect fit to learn more about engaging with a community in all aspects. Autumn has volunteered at PATH and with elementary students in the past, as well as lots of experience planning large scale programs and community based service, and hopes to bring all that she's learned with her to this new opportunity.

  • Chau Anh Nguyen

    FELLOW

    Chau Anh Nguyen is a NorCal native and a CollegeCorps Fellow currently studying Cognitive Science, with a Specialization in Human-Computer Interaction at UCSD. With a mixed background of environmental advocacy through Little Manila Rising and a long-held interest in technology, she is dedicated to exploring the intersection of environmentalism, education, and their unique impact on the San Diego community. By expanding her knowledge, she aims to infuse humanity into technology and enhance her local community’s welfare.

  • Emily Marschall-Niswonger

    FELLOW

    Emily joined the Global ARC though College Corps because she cares about building community and supporting work surrounding environmental and educational justice. She is interested in education and housing systems and their role in oppression, as well as biological sciences and human health. Being here brings Emily closer to her mom who also does this work of community building non-profit work that she hopes to keep with her for her whole life. Excited to learn more and be involved!

  • Kate Martinez

    FELLOW

    Kate is currently a third year at UCSD majoring in Cognitive and Behavioral Neuroscience. She joined Global ARC to be able to expand her research skills and play a role in supporting food production. Right now, she’s looking into going into the research route with the OASIS RMTL Fellowship at UCSD. Kate would also like to learn more about how she can contribute to serving marginalized communities and connecting with the community at OVGG. In her past experiences at UCSD, she would frequently volunteer for events such as their quarterly Bear Gardens and yearly Sun God Festivals to connect with more people and ensure that people would have a pleasant time. However, in her spare time, she usually experiments with apps like Picsart and Photoshop to edit images.

  • Kida - Allyson Bradley

    FELLOW

    Kida is a first-generation anthropology student whose studies focus on climate change, human rights, and education. She joined the Global Arc to gain hands-on experience working with an experienced nonprofit that actively challenges unjust and unsustainable institutions and systems. She has a passion for advocacy, photography, and nature in general. Kida hopes to establish her own educational institution that reinforces the importance of climate change and human rights, as well as advocate for those who can't on an international level by helping communities build resilience.

  • Leslie Perez

    FELLOW

    Leslie became a member of the Global Action Research Center due to its commitments in addressing and advocating for education. her motivation for this stems from her personal experiences as a former K-12 student who frequently relocated, resulting in attending numerous schools in different districts. From a young age, Leslie became aware of the disparities in education opportunities that existed from one district to another. Even now, as she’s had the privilege of interning at different schools, she continued to witness the imbalances in children's access to quality education. This exposure has ignited a great interest in the legal framework and she’s come to realize how profoundly the law influences our daily existence. Leslie hopes to gain a comprehensive understanding of the district and education systems in the United States. She intend to channel this advocacy into a career in law, working to advance the cause of better education for students in the United but also around the world.

  • Parul Vig

    Parul Vig is a passionate and driven third-year undergraduate student at UCSD, pursuing a major in Business Economics. With an unwavering love for badminton and dance, she finds solace in their rhythmic expressions. Parul also deeply appreciates the environment, understanding its importance and striving to make a positive impact within it.

  • Savir Nangia

    FELLOW

    Savir is a new College Corps Fellow at Global ARC. He joined Global ARC because his personal goals aligned with their vision of the future. Global ARC seeks to see change in climate change, food insecurity, and K-12 education and these issues are problems that he wanted to get involved in. Savir wanted to get closer to the San Diego community and by participating in this great organization, he is able to help them out and get closer to them. Some of his interests include drawing and cinema. He is a very friendly person! During his time at Global ARC, he hopes to make the difference he wants to see in the world, and hopes to inspire others in the San Diego community to seek out that change as well.

    Trisha joined The Global ARC to better her community and to help combat food insecurity within her neighborhood. She hopes to gain experience and to make a change for her community as much as possible! Trisha loves hiking painting, and reaing.

  • Urmi Queen

    FELLOW

    Urmi is a Business Economics student at UC San Diego College. She’s a chronic sugar craving night owl from Los Angeles whose life consists of boba drinks and late night activities. She loves stargazing, late night drives, and psychological horror movies. Urmi joined The Global ARC to find a way to give back to the community that makes her connect with the local San Diego community.
